VFLW Match Report: Round 4 vs Geelong
08/06/2026
It was a brilliant game down at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday as we came through with a 22-point win against Geelong.
The first quarter was a close matchup between both teams, with amazing efforts and clearances from Alana Porter early in the game helping to bring the ball forward. Courtney Aughtie started in the forward 50 and made the most of it by kicking our first goal in the final minute of the term.
With scores all tied up at the end of the first quarter, we were ready to fire back! Grace Hodder already had 11 disposals and two tackles before the second quarter, showing her strength in the midfield and consistently throughout the game. In our defensive 50, Erin Woodford consistently showed grit in every contest and won the ball in most. Aughtie proved to be a dominant force up forward, getting her second goal of the game eight minutes into the second term. A few minutes later, a great passage of play from Aughtie set Joanna Lin up for her first Zebs goal; this gave us a four-point lead heading into half-time.
At the start of the second half, with the sun beaming through the overcast weather, both teams started off strong with intense pressure and contest, making it a very back-and-forth game in the middle of the ground. Sunday Hollingsworth laid some terrific tackles and brought the pressure, stopping the Cats in their tracks and helping get the ball inside 50. We saw a fantastic passage of play from our defensive 50 all the way into our forward line with Chloe Saultry getting on the end of the major. In our defensive end, Porter's speed and vision was impeccable, creating opportunities for the Zebs, while Bridget Koczek was all over the Cats and in amongst the action. A late goal to Kera Galaminda Gellar, her first for the Zebs, extended our lead to 16.
We were in control coming into the final quarter, with Aughtie's third goal of the game scored in the first couple of minutes. Mackenzie Williams was strong all day down back with her powerful long kicks forward and ability to find space on the field. Galaminda Gellar looked threatening all day with her sharp handballs and assistance at stoppages.
We kept the Cats goalless in the second half of the game, showing dominance in our pressure and defence all over the ground.
We are off to DSV Stadium next week on Saturday 13 June to take on Williamstown at 4:35pm.
