VFL Match Report: Round 14 vs Sydney Swans
29/06/2026
What was expected to be a cold and rainy day at Blacktown ISP turned out to be a nice, sunny and sometimes overcast day as we took on the Sydney Swans on Saturday.
Lachlan Riley was in the perfect position to get a set shot goal for our first score of the day. Our defenders worked hard as Sydney continued to get the ball in their forward 50. Jhett Haeata and Owen Bater showed great composure in our defensive 50 with some impressive tackles and passages of play, getting it out of the opposition's forward line.
In the second term, Sydney continued their momentum and pressure and kept us goalless for the term, despite scoring opportunities. Liam Coghlan excelled in getting the ball down the field, and Nathan Scollo took some incredible marks, but we could not find our momentum in the first half as we trailed 1.3 (9) to 11.6 (72) at the main break.
We started the third term off well, with Riley creating a stoppage in front of goal and Kynan Brown's ability to weave through players resulting in him scoring a major in the first six minutes of the quarter. Jess Gedi and Charlie Harrop worked hard to get the ball through passages of play with their tremendous speed.
Noah Yze kicked two goals in just one minute - Blake Watson assisting with one on the run and Harrop setting up Yze well for a set shot. We started gaining some momentum after a few goals. However despite our ability to move the ball better around the ground, Sydney continued to find their rhythm and convert on the scoreboard. Haeata bombed the ball long and hard right in front of goals where Watson set up for a great goal after the siren to finish off the quarter.
It was hard to make a comeback in the final quarter as Sydney were able to find good space and continue to hit the scoreboard, as they had been doing all day, and kept us goalless for another quarter. It wasn't our day as we went down 26.16 (172) to 5.9 (39).
Bater, Scollo, Harrop and Nathan Philactides were some of our standout performers in relation to our tackle and mark statistics. Max Hoult played well on debut to help create scoring opportunities.
Gedi returned to the side, finishing with 26 disposals to his name, while Brown and Philactides continued their great form.
We will look to reflect, recover and come back better than ever when we face Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium for our Round 16 clash on Sunday 12th July at 2pm, following the bye this week.
