VFL Football will finally return for the Sandringham Football Club and its fans, with a new competition structure for 2021 that will feature teams from Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland in the largest second-tier football competition in Australia.
The home-and-away season will see 22 clubs compete in a 16-game season across 19 rounds of football from April to August.
A top eight finals structure will commence on Saturday August 28 with the VFL Grand Final to be held on the weekend of September 18/19.
CEO Marcus Ashcroft commented on the new competition and the importance of having football back for everyone around the club.
“It means so much to our players, coaches, staff and volunteers that they get the opportunity to play the game they love,” he said.
“To play in a premier competition against teams in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria is something we are very much looking forward to.”
“Most importantly, we can’t wait to play in front of our members, fans and the community who are extremely excited to see the Zebras play again.”
However, Sandy fans will have to wait a few weeks into the season before they see the Zebras back at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval.
Round One will see the Sandringham Zebras come up against the 2019 VFL premiers, Richmond at Swinburne Stadium.
In Round Two, the Zebras travel to Port Melbourne to face the Borough at ETU stadium.
Zebras coach Jake Batchelor also spoke to excitement surrounding the season.
“We are really excited by the new competition,” he said.
“Our list is relatively young and most of our boys have never travelled interstate for football so we can’t wait as a team to be able to get away and connect outside of Victoria whilst challenging ourselves against quality opposition.
Batchelor also commented on the layoff and the preseason for the team.
“After 9 months away from football, the quad we have assembled so far are really eager to get back into competitive games,” he said.
“I’ve been really impressed with all so far, but in particular Chris Carey, Fin Bayne and Oscar Lewis are showing their strengths.”
“To get deep into the competition we will need all 30 of our players to stand up when required and we have set the expectation of good quality football from the outset.”
For the Zebras, the season begins this weekend with their first practice match against North Melbourne at Arden St, Saturday March 20.
