Sandringham’s 2017 campaign begins this Saturday at 2pm, taking on Essendon at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

The Zebras will be anxious to put on a good show after an offseason of change for the club, with 23 new players on the list.

After three years as an Assistant/Development Coach at St Kilda, Lindsay Gilbee will be taking over the reigns as senior coach. A close partnership with Sandy personnel in his previous role has allowed Gilbee to slot straight into the system.

It will be interesting to see the type of game plan employed by Gilbee, who made his name as an All-Australian rebounding defender with over 200 games for the Western Bulldogs.

For the playing group, Tom Curren, with 69 VFL games under his belt, will captain the side while Kade Answerth and Dylan Weickhardt share the vice-captaincy. These players will be expected to impose a relentless attitude among the playing group and will aim to lead from the front this season as Sandy once again push for finals contention.

Meanwhile, Essendon will attempt to play the role of spoiler at Sandringham’s home opener.

The Bombers will be looking to make up for a disappointing end to last season where they led Footscray heading into the fourth quarter of their semi-final, before being overrun by the eventual premiers.

Interestingly, in 2016, Essendon and Sandringham finished with identical records – with 10 wins and 8 losses – and both saw their seasons come to an end in the second week of the finals.

The Bombers just concluded a solid pre-season with a punishing 73-point victory over Richmond, with James Stewart and Jackson Merrett registering five goals each.

On the Zebras’ side of things, the practice matches consisted of the following results:

Sandringham: 8. 14. 62
Northern Blues: 10. 13. 73

Sandringham: 5.12. 42
Williamstown: 10.11. 71

Sandringham: 3.4. 22
Werribee: 15.10. 100

Sandringham: 20.14. 134
Port Melbourne: 9.14. 68

Sandringham: 7.10. 52
Williamstown: 9.9. 63

Coach Lindsay Gilbee will be hoping for improvement, particularly in terms of goal-scoring as the Zebras kicked more than 8 goals only once. Fortunately, though, the final two games pointed to Sandy getting on the right track. Koby Stevens had 33 disposals in a solid team effort as the squad were unlucky to lose by 11 points away to Williamstown in wet conditions last weekend.

One player with strong form throughout the practice matches was Rowan Marshall. Kicking multiple goals in all games bar one, Marshall was consistent and his five-goal effort against Port Melbourne was a highlight.

With all that said, it is always tough to say whether pre-season form will transition over to the regular season. With the slate blank at 0-0, expect plenty of run and dash as both clubs look to get the season off to a bright start.

Head down to Trevor Barker Beach Oval early to catch the development team, coming off a 20-point win in their final practice match against Williamstown. They will be up against Box Hill, with the match getting underway at 11am.
